Pinterest still the latest craze

With all of the social media sites these days connecting people via Internet, the ideas website creators have are endless. One website in particular that may spark your interest is called Pinterest. Pinterest is a relatively new social media website that allows users to browse through multiple pictures, or ?pins,? varying in content from?32 different categories that it offers. Categories include Do-it-yourself, Fitness, Food & Drink, Photography, Wedding & Events and many others to fulfill any interest group.

The way that Pinterest works is a simple process. People that would like to activate an account request an invite using their e-mail address. The reason a request is necessary is due to the overload of users on the website now, due to popularity. After an invitation is sent, users can choose to connect their account to their Facebook or Twitter account to make an easier and more efficient way to follow their friends and their pins. With Pinterest, you are able to create pinboards in which you can pin pictures you find through your followed friends, or the public category browsing option. You also may add your own photos and links to personal blogs for more information on your interests so others can re-pin your photos. External links are often used when you click on a pin. This redirects the user to another website; a recipe for the dessert you pinned, a website to purchase a product, etc. Once boards are created, users can add as many pictures or pins as they want to so that ideas and pictures can mesh together forming one broad area of interest. When users re-pin a picture, you have to ability to edit the description of a pin so that the web can view your own interpretation of an idea.

Pinterest was founded by Ben Sibermann from West Des Moines, Iowa. It was launched in March 2010. After just nine months, there were over 10,000 users. Pinterest is now based in Palo Alto, California.

Many Pinners? favorite category is the Food & Drink section. This has recipes to creative desserts, appetizers, meals and many more tasty ideas. Seniors Tara Franz and Ashley Falkner whipped up two desserts together.

?We made peanut butter brownies and flourless chocolate cookies,? Franz said.

Along with categories just for fun, useful ideas for organization are also featured. School Librarian Mrs. Thompson uses Pinterest actively for fun, as well for a resource for education. Thompson made multiple signs that benefit the library and teaching visuals.

?We also looked at something that showed different ways to tie a scarf,? Thompson said.

Soon-to-be bride Miss Robinson has looked at the Wedding category to look at inspiration for things like flower arrangements and styles.

Pinterest is not just limited to girls; many things are available for guys too! Although many have become familiar with the website, but not everyone is involved. Make sure to check it out in the future! For now, here is an example of one of the most popular desserts that have got everyone?s mouths watering.

Pinterest's "Cookie-Oreo-Brownie" dessert is a big hit. Start out with 1 box of normal brownie mix, 1 box of oreos, and 2 rolls of cookie dough.

?

Press the cookie dough evenly throughout the whole pan.

?

After dough is spread out, put a single layer of oreos evenly over the dough.

?

Make sure the oreos cover the majority of the dough.

When oreos are placed on the dough, prepare the brownie mix as stated on the box. Pour the brownie batter on top of the oreos and spread evenly.

?

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the outsides look done.

?

Enjoy!

Skin cancer groups join together to commend national ...

Group urges provinces to take quick action for patients with deadly form of skin cancer

VANCOUVER, BC, March 30, 2012 ? National skin cancer groups have come together to commend pCODR (pan-Canadian Oncology Drug Review), for recognizing the clinical value of the newest treatments for melanoma. Joining the Save Your Skin Foundation are the Alberta Society of Melanoma, The Canadian Skin Cancer Foundation and the Canadian Skin Patient Alliance.

?This news is the hope the melanoma community has been waiting on for years,? said Kathy Barnard, founder of Save Your Skin Foundation and a melanoma patient herself. ?Recently there have been great strides in terms of skin cancer prevention with several provinces moving to implement tanning bed legislation. It?s now time to turn to treating this deadly cancer and today?s announcement is a step in the right direction. We are hopeful that the provinces will continue to put emphasis on the importance of melanoma and make these two treatments available to patients as soon as possible.?

In its late stages, the average life expectancy for melanoma is just six months, with a one-year survival rate of only 25 percent, making metastatic melanoma one of the most aggressive forms of cancer and one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer. An estimated 5,500 Canadians will be diagnosed with melanoma this year and 950 will die from it. Melanoma is responsible for 75 percent of the deaths associated with skin cancer.

?This is a major first step and shows that pCODR has recognized the significant progress these two treatments represent for patients,? said Dr. Jo?l Claveau, Dermatologist at the Melanoma and Pigmented Lesions Clinic, Hospital H?tel-Dieu de Qu?bec. ?Physicians have desperately needed new advances and it?s encouraging that now we have two new options. Historically melanoma is a difficult cancer to treat and now with Yervoy and Zelboraf we have a chance to make a difference in survival for patients.?

About Melanoma in Canada
Every year, thousands of Canadians are diagnosed with melanoma, with the incidence of the disease increasing faster than that of any other cancer. Melanoma is a deadly form of skin cancer characterized by the uncontrolled growth of pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) located in the skin. One in 74 men and 1 in 90 women are expected to develop melanoma during their lifetime; 1 in 284 men and 1 in 486 women will die of it. Melanoma is clearly visible on the skin, and 90 per cent of melanomas are caused by exposure to UV light, including tanning beds.

About the Save Your Skin Foundation
The Save Your Skin Foundation is a Canadian not-for-profit foundation. Through events and other initiatives, the Foundation focuses on: raising funds for education and awareness, providing emotional and financial support to those dealing with melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers, and on supporting the ongoing research and treatment of skin cancer ? especially melanoma.

Donations go towards providing critical and timely treatments, as well as ongoing education, research, and awareness initiatives.

The Alberta Society of Melanoma was founded in 1995 by dermatologist Dr. T.G. Salopek and a group of concerned patients and their families. The Alberta Society of Melanoma strives to better educate the general public about melanoma and to provide a support network for patients with melanoma.

SAN DIEGO, March 23, 2012 More than a dozen symposia and other events at the American Chemical Society (ACS) 243rd National Meeting & Exposition are being sponsored or recommended by noted science communicator and ACS President Bassam Z. Shakhashiri, Ph.D. They range from a science outreach event for children at PETCO Park to news from an emerging field of chemistry that promises to produce medicines inside patients' bodies, as well as a symposium on communicating science to the public.

Communicating science is a major part of Shakhashiri's presidential theme for the year. The William T. Evjue Distinguished Chair for the Wisconsin Idea at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Shakhashiri is noted internationally for pioneering the use of demonstrations in the teaching of chemistry in classrooms, as well as to the public in museums, convention centers, shopping malls and retirement homes and at his Science is Fun website. The Encyclopedia Britannica termed Shakhashiri the "dean of lecture demonstrators in America."

Shakhashiri said the symposia connect with the grand challenges that face society and scientists in the 21st century, challenges that range from helping to sustain Earth and its people in the face of population growth and climate change to finite resources, malnutrition and spreading disease.

A schedule of the sessions appears at the end of this press release, and individual topics can be accessed online.

Among the speakers in the plenary session, which is among Shakhashiri's recommendations:

  • Roger Tsien, Investigator, Howard Hughes Medical Institute; Departments of Pharmacology and Chemistry & Biochemistry, University of California, San Diego
  • Laura Kiessling, University of Wisconsin, Hilldale Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry & Laurens Anderson Professor of Biochemistry; Director, Keck Center for Chemical Genomics; Program Director, Chemical Biological Interface Training Program; Editor-in-Chief, ACS Chemical Biology
  • Samuel Stupp, Board of Trustees Professor of Chemistry, Materials Science and Medicine; Director, Institute for BioNanotechnology in Medicine Northwestern University
  • J. Craig Venter, Founder and President, J. Craig Venter Institute; Founder and CEO, Synthetic Genomics Inc.

Carolyn Bertozzi will deliver the Kavli Foundation Innovations in Chemistry Lecture. She is the T.Z. and Irmgard Chu Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology at UC Berkeley, an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Senior Faculty Scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Her interests span the disciplines of chemistry and biology with an emphasis on studies of sugars that coat the surfaces of cells. Her innovations could someday lead to new ways of making medicines inside the human body.

Another highlight of the ACS 243rd National Meeting & Exposition is a session called, "Communicating Chemistry to the Public." A featured speaker is Paul Raeburn, winner of the ACS 2012 James T. Grady-James H. Stack Award for Interpreting Chemistry for the Public. Raeburn is a distinguished science writer, author, editor and program director of New Horizons in Science. Other speakers include ACS President Shakhashiri and the following:

  • Sam Kean, author of The Disappearing Spoon, which transforms the periodic table into engaging and interesting historical stories
  • K.C. Cole, Professor, USC Annenberg School of Journalism and long-time science writer for the Los Angeles Times
  • Carmen Drahl, Associate Editor, Chemical & Engineering News
  • Mariette DiChristina, Editor in Chief, Scientific American
  • Joann Rodgers, Faculty Scholar and Senior Communications Adviser, Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics
  • Pam Sturner, Executive Director, Leopold Leadership Program, Woods Institute for the Environment, Stanford University

Another recommended session is the "Presidential Symposium: Production of Fuel Directly from Sunlight: A Grand Challenge for Chemistry of the 21st Century." Harry B. Gray, Arnold O. Beckman Professor of Chemistry and Founding Director of the Beckman Institute at the California Institute of Technology, and Nate Lewis, who is the George L. Argyros Professor of Chemistry at the California Institute of Technology, co-organized this set of talks on this timely subject.

An overview of the sessions follows.

Bovee & Thill Business Communication Blog ? Blog Archive ...

One of the more intriguing aspects of age diversity in the workplace is the degree to which technology has shaped the communication habits and preferences of each generation. For instance, Generation Y (roughly speaking, those born between 1981 and 1995) has a well-documented preference for electronic media, from texting to IM to social networking. Coupled with a generally more casual approach to information privacy, this reliance on electronic media can clash with the habits and expectations of older workers and managers.

As Generation Y continues to move into workplace and up the managerial ladder, these cultural mismatches are only going to get more common. Moreover, as a recent article in Workforce Management ("Gen Y Execs Shake Up Office Culture") points out, this generation's embrace of entrepreneurship is creating new organizational cultures built around electronic media.

The differences in technology preferences can be significant on their own, but the changes run much deeper than just the tools themselves, of course. Here are some of the issues to consider:

  • Lean versus rich media. Lean media, those with the fewest informational cues and least potential for feedback or personalization, are at the core of this culture clash. For example, Baby Boomers accustomed to walking down the hall to a colleague's office or using their phones for actual voice communication are sometimes dismayed at the tendency of younger workers to fire off a terse text message in situations where they believe a more nuanced live conversation would be more effective. Gen Yers, for their part, can sometimes wonder what all the fuss is about, having grown up texting and IMing.
  • Synchronous communication with real-time feedback. Richer media, including phone and face-to-face conversations, can make it much easier to resolve misunderstandings and negotiate shared meanings. We've probably all had the experience of getting stuck in time-consuming email loops where neither side seems to be getting the message, only to resolve the confusion with a quick phone call.
  • A comfort level with distributed, virtual team communication. As networked and even unstructured organizations become more common and traditional employment gives way to independent contracting for many workers, the ability to communicate without a fixed organizational framework is becoming increasingly important. For all their perceived shortcomings in other areas, Gen Y communicators have a big head start here?and could be developing information encoding and decoding methods that work well in this environment but are perhaps underappreciated by older communicators because they don't fit established patterns and process models.
  • Illusions of communication efficiency and effectiveness. Every mode is vulnerable to the illusion that communication efforts are successful, of course, but email and other asynchronous modes are particularly prone to this because it is so easy to fall into the trap of believing that hitting the "send" or "publish" button is the same thing as communicating.
  • Attitudes about privacy and sharing. These concerns range from publishing sensitive company information (or inappropriate personal information) to treating information as a resource to be shared, rather than as a "power lever" to be hoarded and used selectively.

Given the range of important differences involved in media choices, how far should the business communication course move toward reflecting these emerging preferences? There is never enough time to cover everything we'd like to cover, naturally, so how do we find the optimum balance? For instance, many instructors like to devote time to telephone skills, and understandably so, but should some of that time be shifted over to skill development with instant messaging (as one example), given the shifts in workplace habits? On the other hand, one can argue that the very lack of practice and finesse with phone conversations makes this mode even more important to cover in the business communication course.

We'd love to hear your thoughts, particularly if you've already made changes in your topic coverage or teaching style to accommodate these evolving habits and preferences.

Ex NASA employee sues over religious row

A former senior NASA expert was sacked after being unfairly accused of "harassing co-workers with (his) religion," his lawyer told at the start of an unfair dismissal trial.

Computer administrator David Coppedge was fired from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) last year after expressing support for intelligent design to fellow employees, said his attorney lawyer William Becker.

Coppedge filed a religious discrimination lawsuit in April 2010, and claims he was dismissed nine months later in retaliation for taking the legal action -- but JPL said he was laid off as part of a staff reduction.

In court in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Coppedge's lawyer claimed JPL demoted him for "pushing religion" by loaning co-workers DVDs about intelligence design, which challenges evolutionary theory that life is based on random chance.

"It's come to my attention you've been harassing co-workers with your religion," Becker quotes Coppedge's former project supervisor Gregory Chin as saying.

Coppedge, who had joined JPL in 1996, was an information technology specialist and system administrator -- and team leader -- on the project's Cassini mission to Saturn.

He lost his team leader role in 2009, and left the company last year after 15 years.

In a sworn declaration, he denied he was aggressive in voicing views about religion, including by sending emails criticizing the change in name of the 2003 Cassini Christmas party to a "holiday party."

"I was not pushy, scolding or demanding in these emails," he said. "In fact, my purpose was to convince them to not be so politically correct. It wouldn't have made any sense for me to have been pushy," he said.

JPL lawyers claim that Coppedge forced co-workers to hear his opinions about intelligent design and California's Proposition 8, a 2008 referendum initiative which banned gay marriage in the western US state.

But they say the DVDs had nothing to do with his demotion and that two JPL managers who were Christian -- like Coppedge -- actually bought DVDs about intelligent design from him.

In a statement issued as the trial opened, JPL dismissed the charges, saying: "The suit is completely without merit and we intend to vigorously fight the allegations raised by Mr Coppedge."

JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology, which operates under a contract with NASA.

        > Factory-Built Homes, Modular, News Item > Vol. Fire Dept. has Modular House for Quicker Response

The Enumclaw Patch reports due to local volunteer firemens? inability to respond to fires more quickly from their own homes, the King County Fire District bought a modular home for sleeping quarters to better staff the Cumberland Fire Station. Many of the former volunteers have retired or moved from this town just southeast of Seattle, Washington, leaving the fire station unstaffed. The modular home had belonged to a county commissioner?s relatives, which initially raised eyebrows about possible conflict of interest, and led to questions about alternatives including site-built and new modular. In the end the modular house the district bought for $85,000 cost $307,000 for permits, and to move, install, and hook-up the new quarters.

In its first year, customers are deeply engaged with Muve Music. They are listening to more than 40 hours of music per month. And, since Muve Music's launch in January 2011, customers have downloaded more than 500 million songs and listened to nearly 300 songs per month clearly illustrating the power of mobile music consumption. Furthermore, according to a leading music tracking service, in the month of December, Muve Music's usage represented more than 90 percent of all tethered streams (mobile plays) for the top 300 songs tracked in the mobile applications category.

        The Muve Music Service

In January 2011, Cricket Communications became the first U.S. wireless carrier to offer consumers unlimited music as part of a wireless rate plan. For just $65 a month, Cricket customers across the country can now purchase wireless service that includes unlimited nationwide talk, text, web and unlimited music (full track downloads, ringtones and ringback tones) for their smartphone. This innovative product offering is the first music experience designed specifically for the mobile phone; it provides a superior mobile experience with no download fees or monthly music subscriptions - it's all included.

The Muve service was built for customers for whom the phone, not the computer, is the center of their digital life. With Muve Music, Cricket has eliminated the complexity found with other digital music services - there are no cables, no drivers and no synching required. Everything happens over Cricket's nationwide 3G network to deliver a robust music experience to music lovers on the go.
